QUERIES AND NOTES
This
set of eight books on the
Pollocks, and associated families, comes from research done by Kennet Pollock,
and his cousin Edward A. Langslow Cock, which was started by their uncle
Alexander Pollock. When Kennet died in 1968 all the material collected passed to
his eldest son, David Kennet Pollock, who died in 1982.
According to Andrew
Kennet there was so much material collected that he could not possibly make room
for it in his house, so he threw most of it away, just keeping what looked to be
the most interesting items. This was two large cardboard boxes and three carrier
bags, crammed full of folders, letters, papers, pedigrees, photographs, and
written histories proving the lineage of the Pollok/Pollock family back to 1080.
It proved to be an absolutely fascinating hoard of Pollock family history,
with written accounts of the Pollock families of Over Pollok, Balgray, Lee and
Charing Cross, and the Parsons of Kemerton.
There was also a large amount of
material on the Irish Pollock families showing their descent from the main
family, including written histories on the Pollocks of Newry, Balleyedmond,
Balleymagregrechan and Mountainstown, and showing the descent of James Knox
Polk, the 11th President of the United States of America from the Irish
Pollocks.
All of the historical accounts of these families are tied together
with well laid out Pedigree charts and copious notes amending and updating the
works.
The Family letters dating back to the early 1800's, (many still with
their franked envelopes and some with early postage stamps on) gave a unique
insight into the family and its members, both in Britain and in India where Sir
David Pollock, Knt., K.C. was appointed to the office of Chief Justice of Bombay
in 1846.
The other letters in the collection were correspondence between
Alexander Pollock, Edward A. Langslow Cock, and Kennet Pollock as the wrote to
other Families, Churches, Museums, and Record Offices in their quest for family
information, and the replies they received. All of which make the most
interesting reading. Included were Pedigrees and Histories on many of the
families that are associated with the Pollock lines, such as Crawfurd, Hopton,
Maxwell, Parsons, Williams, Stewart of Darnley, and Stewart of Cardonald.
The name Pollok is a place-name; it has been attributed to a Celtic origin,
for its syllables translated may mean "little hill" or "little pool", but it
might be Scandinavian and mean "head of Lok", or it might even go back to Roman
times, when there were many Temples to Pollux.
The Pollock, or Pollok,
family is one of the few British Families that can trace their ancestry back,
without interuption, to Norman times: their origin was norman, or possibly
Breton; they settled in Scotland, but they never became a Clan, nor did they
have a Tartan, as did their neighbours the Maxwells, who were of Saxon origin,
and who at a very early date bore the Clan name of Maxwells of Pollok.
The
earliest known Pollocks, of whom there is any record, were Peter, Helias, and
Robert, who were described as 'sons of Fulbert'. They came to Scotland with
Walter FitzAlan, about the year 1147; which Walter was a son of Alan Fitz
Flaald, and a brother of William FitzAlan, sheriff of Shropshire.
There can
be no doubt but that the Pollock Crest - a wild Boar, passant, struck through
with a dart - began as a badge, before the introduction of Crests, for there is
a cast of a seal in the British Museum, which was used by Robert de Polloc,
grandson of Fulbert, showing this boar with dart which they date about 1200. The
Motto - Audacter et Strenue - is probably of much later date, but it was in use
when Lord Lyons Registers were first opened in 1672.

THE STAR GROUP OF COMPANIES - £4.25 (CD)
Over the years the various Star companies were to produce, as well as cycles and cars, motor bicycles and tricycles, commercial vehicles, motor coaches, and even an aeroplane or two !
The first Star car offered for sale was based on the Benz, but with improved cooling for its 6hp single cylinder engine : primary drive was by belt with chain final drive. In the early days
Starcars were based on various continental makes and were of first-class workmanship, as indeed were all their products. By 1905 a very comprehensive range of models was available, including a 7 hp twin cylinder car priced at £175, and a 4-cylinder 10 hp at £260, and other models up to 30 hp In 1905 Star commercial vehicles were introduced, first based on the car chassis with a capacity 5 cwt. The range was later to include vehicles of up to 5 ton capacity, and motor coaches. The year 1905 also saw the introduction of the Starling car made by the Star Cycle Company, run by Edward Lisle Jnr. It had a single-cylinder De Dion engme and two-speed gear, and sold for a modest £110. This was followed in 1906 by the Stuart, which was a twin-cylinder car with three-speed gear and shaft drive, produced for only two years.
Then, in 1909, the Starling was also discontinued and the Star Cycle Company introduced the, Briton. The first six cylinder Star was brought out in 1907 and the range continued to contain a variety ot models. The commercials were selling well and among the better known users of Star. were Lever Brothers who had a fleet of 19 at Port Sunlight.
The company suffered a misfortune in 1913 when fire destroyed the body works and some of the vehicles being prepared for the commercial motor show were lost, so. that only the one ton van and a 30/40 cwt chassis were available for exhibition.
Although Star cars were rather expensive they were of high quality and found a ready market. By 1914 Star was among the six largest motor manufacturers in the country Throughout the war Star continued to make commercial vehicles for the home market and also supplied lorries to the War Department and Russian Army. Other activities included manufacture of munitions parts for tanks and mines and as would be expected, aeroplane engines — a considerable number of the air cooled V8 Renault being produced. Work was also done on the A.B.C.-designed Dragon-fly radial, of which great things had been expected but which, due to design faults, was to prove a failure. Guy motors also built some of these unsuccessful engines.
After hostilities ended Star were soon back with a range of private cars based on the pre-war models. A light car of 11.9 hp was introduced in 1921, which had its three-speed gearbox in unit with the engine, and central gear change. Within two years it had become the 12/25 and a 3-litre was added to the range.
