| | HOBBS, Richard Miles | My Grandfather Richard Miles HOBBS, was apprenticed at the
North London Railway 1872-77; He then appears as an "Engine Fitter" in the 1881
Census, lodging at Clearville Place, ASTON, Warwick. What Railway workshops could
have been located in that area?
He married in Clerkenwell, Middx in 1883 and moved to Gateshead, Co Durham, where,
since I later "dumped" a quantity of"Dorman Long" Linen drawings of bridge structures,
I can only surmise he worked for that company for some years. However, in August
1885, he appears to have been on a project in BEACONSFIELD, where my Mother was
born, returning to Middlesbrough, shortly afterwards. What railways would have been
being built in that area at that date?
By 1901 Census, he had moved to Caerleon, Mon, where presumably there would be
bridge/railway building shops, as he was described as "Inspecting Engineer, Railway
Material", he died in June 1910 and was reported to have been in the Bristol area a week
or so previously.
I would greatly appreciate being pointed in the right direction to resolve some of these

| | HOLLAND, Walter | A railway fireman. He was born in 1880 and retired around 1945 and died in 1951. He lived in Wavertree, a suburb of Liverpool, and I remember that he walked to and from work so he would have been based around Wavertree or Edge Hill depots.

| | HOLTON, Ernest Albert | b Nottingham d Builth Wells Powys (my grandfather).
Recorded as platelayer in 1901 census and resident at 1 Coventry Road Bulwell. In the 1911 census he is living at 12 Amanda Street Bulwell. In 1917, he is living at 21 Citadel Street, Nottingham and still a platelayer (source: my father's birth certificate). In 1926, he is living at 4 Nursery Drive, Brown Edge Road, Buxton, Derbyshire and is recorded as a railway engineer (he served as a permanent way inspector) (source: my uncle's apprenticeship papers). In 1935, he is living in Rotherham (source: my grandmother's death certificate). In 1939, his address is: The Engineer's Office, LMS Railway, Swinton, nr Barnsley (source: my father's next of kin details in his attestation papers). In 1942, his address is 31 Wye View, Builth Road, Llandindrod (source: my father's next of kin details on his Army medical records). He died in Builth Wells in 1952. I do not know the normal retirement age for railwaymen at that time, so I do not know whether or not he was a serving railwayman during his time at Builth Wells. There is a chance he may have served in the Army Service Corps in WW1 but that source is only from a possible match in the Medal Roll - I can not find any confirmation in service or pension records.
I assume that he served with the LMS between 1923 and 1948 but do not know what company he may have worked for up until then (Midland Railway, perhaps?). I have found some possible records in the NA catalogues, which may cover his service at LMS (RAIL 426), and also some possible ones if he worked for the Midland Railway (RAIL 491). I have some know-how of searching records at TNA but, based on previous experiences, I would prefer to visit with some definite catalogue numbers rather than turning up and trying to carry out open ended searches, hence my request for some guidance on where to find the necessary records.
