ROTHWELL, JamesMy ancestor James Rothwell was born in Turton, Lancashire in 1818. Two sons were born in Bolton, another in Crewe, a daughter in Romford, a daughter in Portsea and two more children in Brighton, Sussex. In the 1861 census, James wife is described as a rail labourer’s wife but there is no sign of James in this census. (She is not a widow.) I found James in his retirement in 1852 with the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, Hammerman, Loco Department. This from Find My Past. Two of his sons, James and George (my ? grandfather) followed in his footsteps, although George became a boiler maker (probably working in Portsmouth dockyard because he and his family ended up in Bermuda dockyard (wish we still had the land he owned…) I would be very grateful if you could give me any guidance as to what railways James might have been employed by so I can proceed further.
